Today is Tuesday 3rd May. That means 3 more sleeps before I leave home and begin the journey up to the top of the Shetland Islands. I think everything is almost ready.
On Friday, Jenni and I will take a train to Manchester – and then another longer one to Edinburgh – and we will stay the evening with my youngest brother, Dan, and his family. Then, on Saturday, we will take another train up to Aberdeen, and at 5pm the overnight Northlink ferry to Shetland will depart. We have a cabin booked. I’m very excited!
We should arrive in Lerwick, Shetland’s capital and only proper town, at 7.30am on Sunday morning. From there we will make our way by bike in our own good time to the very top, a cycle of about 60 miles. We are staying in a B&B in the village of Baltasound on the island of Unst.
And so on Monday 9th May, the journey proper will begin from the top of OS Landranger map 1 “Shetland – Yell, Unst and Fetlar”, the first small stage in a complicated journey of 204 maps over 6 months. Bring it on!
